Backgammon (tavla) online with friends

Micup (micup.gg) lets two people play backgammon, known in Turkish as tavla, at a table in its 3D rooms; you see the dice and checkers on the table and talk to your opponent by voice. Each game is a single game: the first to bear off all 15 checkers wins, and it counts as a gammon (mars) if the loser has borne off none.

How do you play backgammon with a friend on Micup?

  • Join a voice channel that has a 3D room and click a free seat at a table.
  • If the table is free, choose Backgammon, pick the move time and press "Set up table".
  • The game starts when your friend takes the seat opposite. Others in the channel can watch from beside the table.
  • Drag checkers on the 3D table, or click a checker and then its target point. The app accepts only legal moves.

What are the rules of backgammon?

  • Each player has 15 checkers that move around 24 points toward their own home board.
  • At the start each player rolls one die and the higher roll goes first; ties are rolled again. The starter then rolls both dice fresh.
  • If both dice can be played, you must play both; if only one can, you play the larger. Doubles are played four times.
  • Landing on a point with a single opposing checker hits it. The hit checker goes to the bar, and its owner must bring it back in before moving anything else.
  • You cannot land on a point held by two or more opposing checkers.
  • Once all your checkers are in your home board, you start bearing off. If no die matches exactly, a higher die can bear off your farthest checker.
  • If you have no legal move, the turn passes to your opponent.

How does a game end, and what is a gammon?

The first player to bear off all 15 checkers wins. If the loser has not borne off a single checker, the result is recorded as a gammon (mars). A game on Micup is one game: there are no multi-game matches to a points target and no doubling cube.

A player who leaves the table before the end loses. If your connection drops, you have 30 seconds to come back.

How long do you get per move?

The timer runs per turn. If yours runs out, the app plays a legal move for you; running out of time twice in a row loses the game.

SpeedTime per turn

Normal40 seconds
Slow90 seconds
