Micup vs Discord

Micup (micup.gg) and Discord both give you free servers, voice channels, video and screen sharing; Micup adds 3D rooms and six table games, and its paid tier costs $1.99 a month against $2.99 for Nitro Basic or $9.99 for Nitro at US prices. Taxes and local prices may vary. Discord is ahead on iOS, consoles, encrypted calls, forums and the size of its community, so the right choice depends on what your group does most.

Where is Micup ahead?

At US prices Micup is cheaper if you pay at all, though taxes and local prices may vary. It gives a server far more emoji and sticker room without boosts, and adds a way to hang out that Discord does not offer: a voice channel you can walk around in. The rest of Micup's free tier is close to Discord's, so these are the differences worth moving for.

  • Price: Micup Plus costs $1.99 a month or $19.13 for 12 months. Taxes and local prices may vary. Discord lists Nitro Basic at $2.99 and Nitro at $9.99 a month in the US.
  • Buying once: Plus can be a one-time package that never renews. Discord sells monthly or annual subscriptions, and Nitro can also be bought as a gift for someone else.
  • Refunds: every Plus or cosmetic payment made on micup.gg can be fully refunded within 14 days, no reason needed. Google Play purchases go through Google Play. Discord takes Nitro and Boost refund requests within 5 days, once per category, and decides them case by case.
  • 3D rooms: a voice channel can open as one of 5 3D rooms where people hang out as avatars, in a desktop browser or the desktop app, for free. No VR headset needed.
  • Table games at the table: Okey, 101 Okey, backgammon, chess, draughts and Turkish draughts are built into 3D rooms, so you play with 3D pieces while you talk. Ranked play and leaderboards are on.
  • Emoji and stickers: every server gets 500 custom emoji and 500 sticker slots without boosts, against 50 emoji slots and 5 stickers on Discord.
  • Source: Micup's web app, server and desktop app are open source under AGPLv3, and the source of each release can be downloaded without an account.
  • Other things that come free: a built-in Feed with posts, follows and polls outside any server; group DMs for up to 50 people; custom CSS for your own app; an interface in 34 locales.

Where is Discord ahead?

  • iOS: Discord has an iOS app. Micup does not yet; iPhone users open micup.gg in the browser and do not get 3D rooms.
  • Consoles and VR: Discord works with PlayStation, Xbox and Meta Quest. Micup has none of these.
  • Call encryption: Discord requires end-to-end encryption on non-Stage voice and video calls. Micup does not claim end-to-end encryption for calls, and its text messages are not end-to-end encrypted. Discord messages are not end-to-end encrypted either.
  • Screen sharing at the top end: Nitro streams at up to 4K and 60 fps. Micup's Plus option has the same ceiling, but it sends a single stream today, so a viewer on a slow connection can end up with no picture.
  • Noise suppression on phones: Krisp is free and also runs on Android and iOS. We have not separately tested Micup's neural filter on Android.
  • Paid uploads: Nitro goes up to 1 GB; Plus stops at 500 MB.
  • Server features: Discord has forum channels, threads, announcement channels, Stage channels, scheduled events and polls in chat. Micup has no Stage, announcement or scheduled event feature, polls live only in the Feed, and forums and threads are not open to users yet.
  • Size and ecosystem: Discord lists 25 million members per server, and most of the communities, bots and apps people want are already there. Micup has a short bot catalog, and its capacity has not been published as a tested number.
  • Younger users: Discord starts at 13 in most countries; Micup starts at 15, or higher where local law requires (16 in Germany and Poland).

How do you move from Discord to Micup?

  1. Verify your Micup account email, then press the plus button in the sidebar and choose “Import Discord template”.
  2. Paste your Discord server template link, open “Open template JSON”, copy all of its text into the box, then pick a name and icon.
  3. Micup creates a new server with the same channels, categories, roles and channel permissions. Stage channels become voice channels; forum and media channels are skipped.
  4. Messages and members do not move. Create a link with “Invite friends” and share it with your members.
  5. Point bots at Micup by changing three addresses and the token. The list of differences is in the developer docs at micup.gg/docs/bots/discord-uyum/.

Why are people comparing Discord with other apps right now?

Two Discord changes are in the news. On 22 September 2026 Discord announced a global age assurance rollout: most users get an age group estimated from account signals such as account age and activity, though not in the UK and Australia, and Discord says it does not look at messages or calls for this. Discord says more than 90% of users will not be asked to confirm their age. Confirmation is needed for age-restricted content and settings and for speaking in a Stage channel, not for normal use; the options include a credit card, an app store age range, a video selfie or an ID scan, and they vary by region.

On 27 October 2026 Discord said that Discoverable Servers will get public web pages from 16 November 2026, with selected messages appearing in search engines from mid-December. Usernames and avatars are not shown, DMs and private servers are excluded, admins can close channels, and users can opt out. The member setting for messages is off by default in the EU, the UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia and South Korea, and teens are excluded.

Whether these changes matter to you depends on what you use Discord for. If neither touches your server, price and features are a better reason to compare.

How does Micup handle your data?

Micup's privacy policy says it does not sell personal data and does not use advertising cookies. Google Analytics is on by default and you can turn it off. Connections use TLS, text messages are stored on Micup's servers and are not end-to-end encrypted, and voice and video are not recorded. The app, database and voice servers are in Germany today, files are stored with Cloudflare, and some personal data also goes to the US and the UK. The privacy policy lists each provider.

Will my Discord bot work on Micup?

Bots written with discord.js 14, discord.py 2, JDA 6 or discordeno 21 can connect to Micup by changing three addresses and the token, because Micup serves the Discord API versions 9 and 10 and the matching gateway. Some features differ: Components V2 is off, there is no AutoMod API, no bulk ban endpoint, no application emoji or SKU endpoints, and Discord voice libraries and Lavalink do not work because Micup uses LiveKit for voice.

Frequently asked questions

Is Micup free like Discord?

Yes. Both have a free account with servers, voice channels, video and screen sharing. Micup also includes its five 3D rooms and six table games for free. Plus and cosmetics are optional, and most extra 3D outfit parts are paid.

Is Micup cheaper than Discord Nitro?

At base prices, yes: Micup Plus is $1.99 a month or $19.13 for 12 months. Discord lists Nitro Basic at $2.99 and Nitro at $9.99 a month in the US. Taxes and local prices can change both sides, and Nitro includes 1 GB uploads against 500 MB on Plus.

Does Micup Plus renew like Nitro?

Only if you choose the subscription. A one-time package for 1, 3 or 12 months does not renew. In the Android app, Plus is sold only as a Google Play subscription.

Does Discord have 3D rooms?

Discord has no walkable 3D rooms. Its Living Room view is described as an experiment available to a very limited number of servers. That can change, so check Discord's Voice Channels FAQ linked in the sources.

Does Discord have table games?

Yes. Its official Activities include Chess in the Park, Checkers In The Park and Poker Night. The difference on Micup is that you sit at a table in a 3D room as an avatar, and Okey and backgammon are built in.

Can I use Micup on iPhone?

There is no iOS app yet. You can open micup.gg in the iPhone browser for chat, but 3D rooms open only on a computer.

Is Micup end-to-end encrypted?

No claim is made for that. Text messages are not end-to-end encrypted, and Micup does not claim end-to-end encryption for calls. Discord does encrypt non-Stage calls end to end, so if that matters most, Discord is ahead here.

Will my messages move from Discord to Micup?

No. Template import brings channels, categories, roles and channel permissions. Messages and members stay on Discord, and you invite people with a link.

Is Micup owned by or connected to Discord?

No. Micup is operated by O Group MMC, registered in Azerbaijan, and has no connection to Discord Inc.

Micup vs Discord: which should I pick?

Discord has a far larger community and more features such as stage channels and events; Micup adds free 3D rooms and table games.
