Micup, a Discord alternative with 3D rooms

Micup (micup.gg) is a free Discord alternative with servers, text and voice channels, screen sharing, roles and bots, plus five 3D rooms you enter as an avatar and six built-in table games. Its paid tier costs $1.99 a month against $2.99 for Nitro Basic or $9.99 for Nitro at US prices, and taxes and local prices may vary. It has no iOS app yet, so it suits groups on computers and Android better than groups on iPhones or consoles.

How is Micup different?

The everyday setup will feel familiar: servers, text channels, voice channels, direct messages, roles, moderation and bots. These are the concrete reasons to try Micup instead.

  • 3D rooms: a voice channel can open as Night Lounge, Coffeehouse, Campfire, Game Room or Cinema, and you sit or walk around as an avatar. It works in a desktop browser or the desktop app, for free, with no VR headset.
  • Table games inside the room: Okey, 101 Okey, backgammon, chess, draughts and Turkish draughts, played at a table while you talk.
  • A lower price: Micup Plus costs $1.99 a month or $19.13 for 12 months, as a one-time purchase or a subscription. Taxes and local prices may vary.
  • Refunds: every payment on micup.gg can be fully refunded within 14 days, no reason needed.
  • More emoji room: every server gets 500 custom emoji and 500 sticker slots without boosts.
  • Open source: Micup's web app, server and desktop app are open source under AGPLv3, and the source of each release can be downloaded without an account.
  • A built-in Feed: you can post, follow people and run polls outside any server.
  • Bot compatibility: bots written with discord.js 14, discord.py 2, JDA 6 or discordeno 21 can connect by changing three addresses and the token. Some features differ.

Why do people look for a Discord alternative?

Age assurance is one reason. On 22 September 2026 Discord announced a global rollout in which an age group is estimated from account signals; Discord says it does not read messages or calls for this and that more than 90% of users will not be asked to confirm their age. Confirmation applies to age-restricted content and settings, and to speaking in a Stage channel, not to normal use. Where it is needed, the options include a credit card, an app store age range, a video selfie or an ID scan, and they vary by region.

Search visibility is the newest reason. On 27 October 2026 Discord said Discoverable Servers will get public web pages from 16 November 2026 and that selected messages will reach search engines from mid-December. Usernames and avatars are hidden, DMs and private servers are excluded, and users can opt out. The member setting for messages is off by default in the EU, the UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia and South Korea, and teens are excluded.

Other people simply want a lower price, a different way to hang out, or software whose source they can read. Micup fits those last three better than it fits a move made for encryption, where Discord calls are ahead.

Is Discord available in every country?

No. A 24-country test by the commercial site vpnalert on 31 October 2026 found Discord blocked in China, Iran, Russia and Türkiye. Russia blocked it on 8 October 2024. Türkiye blocked it on 9 October 2024 by court order. In Brazil the platform is not blocked, but Discord live video was suspended by the data protection authority in August 2026; the last report we could verify is from September 2026.

These dates can change quickly, so check a current source for your country.

Who should not switch to Micup?

  • Groups on iPhones: there is no iOS app yet, and 3D rooms do not open in a phone browser.
  • Console players: Micup has no PlayStation or Xbox app.
  • VR users: Micup has no VR support.
  • Anyone who needs encrypted calls or messages: Micup does not claim end-to-end encryption, and text messages are not end-to-end encrypted.
  • Servers built on forums, threads, announcement channels, Stage or scheduled events: Micup does not offer these to users today.
  • Communities that depend on a large catalog of bots and apps: Micup lists 7 official and 2 community bots.
  • People under 15: Micup requires users to be at least 15, or older where local law requires.
  • Groups spread far from Europe: Micup voice servers are in Germany today, so the distance adds delay. We have not measured voice delay, so we make no latency claim.

How do you move a Discord server to Micup?

Micup rebuilds the structure of a server from a Discord template. Channels, categories, roles and channel permissions come across; messages and members do not. Your account email must be verified first.

  • Copy your Discord server's template link.
  • In Micup, press the plus button in the sidebar and choose “Import Discord template”.
  • Paste the link, open “Open template JSON”, copy all of its text into the box, then pick a name and icon and create the community.
  • Check the result: Stage channels become voice channels, and forum and media channels are skipped.
  • Use “Invite friends” to create a link and share it with your members. You choose how long it stays valid.
  • Move your bots by changing three addresses and the token. The list of differences is in the developer docs at micup.gg/docs/bots/discord-uyum/.

What are the other Discord alternatives?

Micup is not the right answer for everyone. Stoat and Root sit closest to Discord's server model, TeamSpeak and Mumble focus on voice, Element on encrypted chat, and Kosmi on watch parties. Our comparison pages show each one row by row, with sources, and the full list says which option fits which group.

Where does Micup run?

Micup runs in the browser with nothing to install, in desktop apps for Windows, macOS and Linux, and on Android through Google Play. An iOS app is in development. 3D rooms and table games need a computer with WebGL2; on phones, voice channels open in the regular flat view.

Frequently asked questions

Which free Discord alternative should I pick?

It depends on what you need. For 3D rooms and table games in a browser, Micup. For an open source server model, Stoat. For voice-only groups, Mumble or TeamSpeak. For encrypted chat, Element. We make Micup, so read our list with that in mind.

Is Micup free?

Yes, the account and basic use are free, including servers, voice and video chat, screen sharing, 3D rooms and table games. Micup Plus and cosmetic items are optional purchases, and most extra 3D outfit parts are paid.

Does Discord require ID now?

Not for normal use. Discord says most users get an age group automatically and more than 90% will not be asked to confirm. Confirmation is needed for age-restricted content and settings, and an ID scan is only one of several options.

Will my Discord messages move to Micup?

No. Template import brings over channels, categories, roles and channel permissions. Messages and members stay behind, and you invite your members with a link.

Do I need a VR headset for the 3D rooms?

No. The rooms run on an ordinary computer screen with a mouse and keyboard. Micup has no VR support.

Does Micup work on phones?

Yes, on Android through Google Play and in a phone browser for chat and voice. 3D rooms and table games need a computer, and the iOS app is in development.

Can my Discord bot run on Micup?

Often yes. Bots built with discord.js 14, discord.py 2, JDA 6 or discordeno 21 connect by changing three addresses and the token. Some features differ, such as Components V2 and voice libraries.

Is Micup safe?

Micup has a Report button next to every message, roles, blocking and spam protection, and requires users to be at least 15, or older where local law requires. Text messages are not end-to-end encrypted, so do not share secrets in chat.

Is Micup owned by Discord?

No. Micup is operated by O Group MMC, a company registered in Azerbaijan, and has no connection to Discord. Discord is a trademark of Discord Inc.

Is there a Discord alternative with voice and screen sharing that works in the browser?

Yes. Micup runs in the browser with nothing to install, and has voice channels and free screen sharing at 720p 30 fps.
