Micup vs Stoat (formerly Revolt)

Micup (micup.gg) and Stoat, the app formerly called Revolt, are both Discord-style chat apps with servers, published source code and free 720p screen sharing; Micup adds 3D rooms, table games and an optional paid tier, while Stoat is free throughout and can be run on your own server. Choose Stoat if you want a free project you can host yourself, and Micup if you want more emoji room, an Android app out of early access, avatars and games.

Where is Micup ahead?

  • 3D rooms: a voice channel can open as one of 5 3D rooms where people hang out as avatars, in a desktop browser or the desktop app, for free. No VR headset needed.
  • Six table games are built into 3D rooms: Okey, 101 Okey, backgammon, chess, draughts and Turkish draughts.
  • More room by default: 500 custom emoji and 500 stickers per server, and 25 MB uploads, against repository defaults of 100 emoji and 20 MB on Stoat.
  • Higher ceilings with Plus: 500 MB uploads, 4,000 characters and a screen sharing option up to 4K at 60 fps, for $1.99 a month. Taxes and local prices may vary. Actual quality depends on your connection and device.
  • Android: Micup has a full release on Google Play, and Stoat lists its Android app as early access.
  • Bots written with discord.js 14, discord.py 2, JDA 6 or discordeno 21 can connect to Micup by changing three addresses and the token. Some features differ.
  • Micup has a built-in Feed with posts, follows and polls outside any server.

Where is Stoat ahead?

  • It is free throughout. Custom emoji, 20 MB files and animated avatars do not need a subscription, and Stoat says it stays free and open source.
  • You can run it yourself. Micup does not offer that.
  • Cameras: Stoat puts no limit on cameras in a call. Micup stops new cameras past 25.
  • Younger users can join at 13 in most places; Micup starts at 15, or higher where local law requires.
  • Linux is fully supported, including Wayland, according to Stoat. We have not tested Wayland on Micup.
  • iPhone: Stoat offers a web app you add to the home screen. Micup is used in the iPhone browser until its app is out.

How do you move from Stoat to Micup?

  1. Create a free account on micup.gg and a new server.
  2. Rebuild your channels, categories and roles by hand. There is no Stoat import.
  3. Upload your custom emoji; each server has 500 slots.
  4. Create an invite with “Invite friends” and post it in your Stoat server.
  5. Decide whether to keep the Stoat server for history. Messages do not move.

Is Stoat the same as Revolt?

Yes. Revolt changed its name to Stoat in October 2025. The site still shows Revolt Platforms Ltd as the company name. Older lists that recommend Revolt are talking about this app.

Which is better for a group of friends?

If your friends mostly talk and share screens, both will do the job, and Stoat costs nothing at any point. If you want somewhere to sit together, play a game of backgammon or show off an avatar, Micup does something Stoat does not list.

If your group cares most about running its own infrastructure, Stoat is the clear pick. Micup publishes its source, but it is offered only as a hosted service, with servers in Germany today.

Frequently asked questions

Is Micup or Stoat open source?

Both. Stoat's backend is generally licensed under AGPLv3. Micup's web app, server and desktop app are open source under AGPLv3, and the source of each release can be downloaded without an account.

Does Stoat have screen sharing?

Yes. Stoat added video and screen sharing in July 2026, at 720p and 30 fps for now. Older comparisons that say it has none are out of date.

Does Stoat have 3D rooms or table games?

Its site does not list them. Micup has five 3D rooms and six table games, free, on computers.

Does either app have an iOS app?

Neither has a native app listed. Stoat offers a web app you add to the home screen. Micup has an iOS app in development and works in the iPhone browser, without 3D rooms.

Can I move my Stoat server to Micup automatically?

No. Micup imports Discord templates, not Stoat servers, so you rebuild channels and roles by hand and invite people with a link.
