Micup vs Root

Micup (micup.gg) and Root (rootapp.com) both let you rebuild a Discord server from a template; Root has larger published limits and an iOS app, while Micup has a browser version, 3D rooms, table games and more custom emoji. Choose Root if your group is on phones and wants high limits, and choose Micup if you want avatars and games on a computer, or a version that runs in a browser.

Where is Micup ahead?

  • A browser version: Micup opens at micup.gg with nothing to install. Root does not list a web version on its download page.
  • 3D rooms: a voice channel can open as one of 5 3D rooms where people hang out as avatars, in a desktop browser or the desktop app, for free. No VR headset needed.
  • Six table games are built into 3D rooms: Okey, 101 Okey, backgammon, chess, draughts and Turkish draughts.

How do you move from Root to Micup?

  1. If your server began on Discord, use the same Discord template: in Micup, press the plus button and choose “Import Discord template”.
  2. If it did not, rebuild channels and roles by hand. There is no Root import.
  3. Upload your custom emoji.
  4. Share a link from “Invite friends”. Messages and members do not move.

Which one is closer to Discord?

Both follow the same server, channel and role model, and both import Discord templates. Root sticks closer to phones and large limits; its download page lists apps for every main platform except a web version. Micup puts more into the time people spend together on a computer, with the option to walk around a room, sit at a table and play.

If you want to test both, keep your Discord server and import its template into each one. The Micup import only reads the template.
