Micup vs Mumble
Micup (micup.gg) is a hosted app with voice, text, camera, screen sharing and 3D rooms, while Mumble is a free, open source voice client you connect to a server of your own or someone else's. Choose Mumble if you want voice and nothing else on a server you control; choose Micup if your group also wants text channels, video and a browser version, with nothing to host.

Checked on both sides on 31 October 2026. "Not listed" means the cited page does not show it. We have not measured voice delay on either app, so there is no latency row.

Where is Micup ahead?
Micup covers the things a Mumble server leaves to other apps. Your group gets one place for talking, messages and video, and nobody has to rent or maintain a machine.
- No server to run: a Micup server is free and hosted for you.
- A browser version: people can join without installing anything.
- Camera and screen sharing, at 720p and 30 fps for free.
- Text channels, direct messages, a Feed, roles, moderation and bots in the same app.
- An Android app on Google Play.
- 3D rooms and six table games on computers, with no VR headset.
Where is Mumble ahead?
- It is free with nothing to buy, and it stays simple.
- You control the server, including who can reach it. Micup is hosted only.
- Its focus is low-latency voice. We have not measured Micup against it, and Micup voice servers are in Germany today, so a nearby Mumble server may well be closer.
- Game positional audio: voices follow in-game positions in supported games. Micup positional audio works in its own 3D rooms, not in your game.
- The licence is permissive BSD-style, which gives you more freedom than AGPLv3 when you reuse the code.
How do you move from Mumble to Micup?
- Create a free Micup account and a server.
- Rebuild your channel tree as voice channels and categories. There is no Mumble import.
- Set roles for admins and members.
- Under Settings › Voice & video, set your input device and push-to-talk key.
- Share a link from “Invite friends”.
When is voice alone enough?
A dedicated voice client does one job. If your group already has a home for text and only needs a voice channel during a game, Mumble covers that.
Micup makes sense when you want a single place for the whole group. If you end up running Mumble for voice, another app for text and a third for screen sharing, Micup puts those in one window. If you do not need any of that, Mumble's simplicity is a real advantage.
Is Mumble still maintained?
Yes on desktop. A stable release came out in October 2026, and a new version is in testing. Mobile is the weak spot: the downloads page says the iOS app is unmaintained, and Android relies on the third-party Mumla app.

Frequently asked questions
Is Mumble free?
Yes. Mumble is free and open source. You need a server, which you run yourself or get from a host. A Micup server is free and hosted for you.
Does Mumble have screen sharing?
Not in the stable version for now; related work is open on GitHub. Micup has screen sharing free at 720p and 30 fps.
Which has better noise suppression?
Both include free noise suppression: ReNameNoise on Mumble and a neural filter based on DeepFilterNet on Micup. We have not run a test between them.
Does Micup work without installing anything?
Yes, in a browser. Mumble is a desktop client, and its downloads page does not list a web version.
Can I use Mumble on my phone?
There is no official Android app, and the official iOS app is unmaintained. The third-party Mumla app covers Android. Micup has an Android app on Google Play and no iOS app yet.
