Where is Micup ahead?

Micup treats voice as the starting point. You don't enter a chat room to meet strangers: you open a voice channel in your own server, and your friends are there as avatars.

  • Voice is free in every room, in a browser or the desktop app. According to its support page, IMVU room voice needs IMVU Desktop, and live room voice streaming is a VIP feature.
  • The price of the paid tier: Micup Plus is $1.99 a month, as a one-time purchase or a subscription. Taxes and local prices may vary. IMVU VIP starts at $4.99 a month.
  • 3D audio: voices come from where people are in the room.
  • Six table games are built into 3D rooms, so there is something to do together.
  • A full chat app: servers, text channels, direct messages, roles, moderation and bots.
  • A shared screen plays on a room TV or the Cinema screen.

Where is IMVU ahead?

  • Avatars and clothes: IMVU has a very large catalog and economy. Micup has 386 parts and is not trying to match that.
  • Creators: IMVU has a creator program and tips for hosts. Micup outfits come from its own catalog.
  • Phones: IMVU has iOS and Android apps. Micup 3D rooms open only on computers, and there is no iOS app yet.
  • History: IMVU is one of the established names in 3D chat.
  • Age: IMVU starts at 13; Micup starts at 15, or higher where local law requires.
  • Meeting new people: IMVU is built for that. Micup rooms live inside servers, so you usually join through an invite.

How do you try Micup after IMVU?

  1. Create a free account on micup.gg on a computer. Avatars and credits from IMVU do not carry over.
  2. Use “Create a community”, or join one with an invite link.
  3. Join a voice channel. It opens as a 3D room, and you enter in the default look.
  4. Open “Outfit” to change your face, hair and clothes; 80 faces and 8 hairstyles are free.

Are there games like IMVU without a download?

Micup opens in a desktop browser with nothing to install, and needs a computer with WebGL2. You sit or walk around a 3D room as an avatar and talk by voice. No VR headset is needed. It is less of a dress-up game and more of a place to spend time with people you know.

IMVU also lets you enter a 3D chat room from its website, and its support page says voice in a room still needs IMVU Desktop.

What can your avatar do on Micup?

Your character can wave, dance, jump, crouch, punch and faint, sit at tables and move between seats. The outfit editor has 9 slots: face, hair, top, bottom, shoes, hat, glasses, accessory and costume. Walking is on in rooms with up to 32 people. Micup characters are stylised, and the rooms are the focus rather than the wardrobe.
