What is a good Rec Room alternative now that it has closed?

Rec Room shut down on 1 June 2026, and Micup (micup.gg) is an option if you mainly came to hang out and play with friends as avatars, on a computer, with no VR headset. What does Micup give a former Rec Room player?

Micup is much smaller in scope than Rec Room was. What it keeps is the feeling of being in a room with your friends, with your voice and an avatar.

  • No VR headset needed: a voice channel can open as one of 5 3D rooms where people hang out as avatars, in a desktop browser or the desktop app, for free.
  • Night Lounge, Coffeehouse, Campfire, Game Room and Cinema, with 12 to 54 seats.
  • Six table games are built into 3D rooms: Okey, 101 Okey, backgammon, chess, draughts and Turkish draughts. Ranked play and leaderboards are on.
  • 3D audio: voices come from where people are in the room.
  • An avatar with 386 parts: a default look, 80 faces and 8 hairstyles are free; other items are paid.
  • Moves: wave, dance, jump, crouch, punch and faint.
  • A shared screen plays on a room TV or the Cinema screen.
  • A full chat app around the rooms: servers, text channels, direct messages and a Feed.

  2. Create a free account and a server on micup.gg, on a computer.
  3. Add a voice channel and pick a room under “Room theme”, for example Game Room.
  4. Share a link from “Invite friends”.
  5. Join the voice channel, open “Outfit” to set up your avatar, and sit down at a table.

Can I play on Micup without a VR headset?

Yes, that is the only way it works. You use a mouse and keyboard on a computer: click a free seat, walk with WASD, and talk by voice. The window must be at least 640 pixels wide and your browser needs WebGL2. If your computer cannot run a room, the flat view opens and your voice chat keeps going.
