Where is Micup ahead?

Kosmi is built around rooms you open and share by link. Micup is built around a server, with channels, roles and message history your group keeps.

  • A lasting server: text channels, voice channels, roles, moderation and bots.
  • 3D rooms: a voice channel can open as one of 5 3D rooms where people hang out as avatars, in a desktop browser or the desktop app, for free. No VR headset needed.
  • A cinema with seats: in the Cinema room, a shared screen plays on the big screen in front of 54 seats while everyone talks.
  • Six table games are built into 3D rooms: Okey, 101 Okey, backgammon, chess, draughts and Turkish draughts.
  • Screen sharing above 1080p: Plus has an option up to 4K at 60 fps for $1.99 a month. Taxes and local prices may vary. Actual quality depends on your connection and device.
  • Desktop apps for Windows, macOS and Linux, with push-to-talk that works while a game is open.

Where is Kosmi ahead?

  • No account for guests: anyone can join by link. Everyone on Micup needs a free account, and must be at least 15, or older where local law requires.
  • Synced streaming: Kosmi says it plays services such as Netflix and YouTube in sync. Micup has no synced player today, and you watch through a shared screen.
  • A wider game mix: poker, card and drawing games and retro console games.
  • Quick setup for one night: you create a room and send a link. A Micup server takes a little longer to set up.
  • iOS: Kosmi has an iPhone app. Micup does not yet.
  • Phones: Kosmi runs its rooms on mobile, while Micup 3D rooms need a computer.

How do you bring a Kosmi group to Micup?

  1. Create a free Micup account and a server.
  2. Add a voice channel and set its room theme, for example Cinema, under the channel settings.
  3. Share a link from “Invite friends”. Each person creates a free account.
  4. For a movie night, one person shares their screen and everyone presses “Watch” on the screen. Only share content you have the right to show.

Which is better for a movie night?

For a quick, synced movie night where guests have no account, Kosmi is built for that job. Micup works differently: one person shares their screen, and it plays on the big screen in the Cinema room or on a room TV, while everyone sits nearby as an avatar and talks. It takes more setup, but the room feels shared.

A shared screen is free at 720p and 30 fps, and quality above that needs Plus or a boosted server. In a Level 2 boosted server, any member can share at up to 1080p and 60 fps.

Which is better for a regular group of friends?

If you meet every week and want a place that stays between sessions, a server suits you better: your text channels, roles and voice rooms are still there. If you meet twice a year for a film, opening a Kosmi room is less work than asking everyone to create an account.
