Where is Micup ahead?

Micup is the shorter path into a 3D room. After a free sign-up, you open a link in a desktop browser, and you are there with your friends as an avatar, with no headset and nothing to install.

  • No VR headset and no install: 3D rooms run in a desktop browser or the desktop app, for free.
  • Mac and Linux: Micup runs there in a browser or in an app. VRChat does not list them.
  • Six table games are built into 3D rooms: Okey, 101 Okey, backgammon, chess, draughts and Turkish draughts.
  • Plus costs $1.99 a month or $19.13 for 12 months, as a one-time purchase or a subscription. Taxes and local prices may vary.
  • A place of your own: rooms sit inside your server, with text channels, roles and moderation around them.
  • 3D audio: while seated, voices come from the direction of the speaker. Nobody fades out to silence.
  • Modest hardware rules: a window at least 640 pixels wide, WebGL2, more than 2 processor cores and more than 2 GB of memory. If your computer falls short, the flat view opens and the voice chat keeps going.

Where is VRChat ahead?

  • VR: Micup has no VR support, and VRChat is built for it.
  • Depth: user-made worlds and avatars go far beyond five fixed rooms and a parts catalog.
  • Phones: VRChat runs on iOS and Android. Micup 3D rooms open only on computers.
  • Cross-play: people on headsets, computers and phones meet in the same worlds.
  • Creators: anyone can build a world. Micup has no room or avatar builder.
  • Reach: VRChat has a large, long-running community. Micup is small today.
  • Younger users: VRChat starts at 13; Micup starts at 15, or higher where local law requires.

How do you try Micup after VRChat?

  1. On a computer, create a free account at micup.gg. VRChat avatars do not carry over.
  2. Use “Create a community”, add a voice channel, and pick a room under “Room theme”.
  3. Share a link from “Invite friends”.
  4. Join the voice channel. Open “Outfit” to set up your character, click a seat to sit, and use WASD to walk.

Is there a VRChat alternative without VR?

Yes. Micup is built for an ordinary computer: mouse, keyboard and a browser. VRChat itself also runs on Windows without a headset, so if you are on Windows and want its worlds, that is an option too. Micup suits you better if you use a Mac or Linux, or do not want to install anything, or if your friends only want to sit and talk.

How different do they feel?

VRChat is a world to explore: you hop between places other people built, and the range is huge. Micup is more like a living room for a group you already know. There are five rooms, and the point is the people, the voice chat and a game at the table.

Micup characters are stylised, with a default look, 80 faces and 8 hairstyles for free. You cannot upload your own avatar.
